With greater competition than ever before, paired with rising running costs, UK hotels are under constant pressure.

So, it makes sense where possible to diversify the business model to try and create new revenue streams.

Many hotels are doing this by simply broadening their offering to include attractions beyond just comfortable accommodation such as spa and wellness centres, cooking courses and exciting event calendars featuring concerts, theatre, festivals and more.

But a few have taken this one step further, using their hotels to create entirely new associated businesses.

Some fantastic clients of ours have done this with great success - the owners of the beautiful Beckford Arms in Tisbury, Wiltshire, and The Talbot Inn in Mells, Somerset, whose hotels provided the launchpad for the now nationally recognised Bramley Products brand.

Bramley Products was the brainchild of Chloë Luxton, formerly of Cowshed and Green & Spring, whose husband Charlie is a co-owner of the two boutique country pub hotels alongside Dan Brod and Matt Greenlees.

After struggling to find any hotel bathroom amenity brands which used natural ingredients, Chloë decided to do it herself.

Bramley Products was launched in 2009, initially for the guest bathrooms of the eight-bedroom Beckford Arms.

Now, eight years on, Bramley Products are stocked in more than 350 pubs, restaurants and hotels across the UK including the Pig hotels, Gail’s Bakery, Cirrus luxury pub group.

Chloë said: “We created Bramley really quickly for the Beckford Arms and it just grew organically.

“My husband Charlie has been in the hotel and hospitality business for some time so we had a lot of friends in the industry who came down for weekends. They came away saying how they would love to have Bramley products in their own hotels and restaurants.

“The more hotels Bramley is used in, the more it becomes a self-marketing product because people see the products and use them and they carry really positive associations of lovely places which adds to the appeal.”

All Bramley Products are manufactured in Somerset using natural products ethically sourced. The essential oils used are fair trade, wild crafted and grown sustainably while the base ingredients are naturally derived from raw items such as sugar and coconut and our wax comes from soya. 

Bramley Products do not contain harmful or unethical ingredients such as petrochemicals, sulphates, artificial colours, artificial fragrances, parabens, microbeads, silicones, propylene glycol or phthalates.

Chloë is now looking to expand the brand into the retail market.

“When I first launched Bramley Products I had three very small children and basically grew the business from my kitchen table,” she said.

“Now the children are a bit older I can devote more time to really driving the business.”

This is just one example of how a hotel business can be used as a platform from which other successful ventures can grow.

Hotels offer a ready test bed for many business ideas. So, if you are willing to be creative and put in the extra work, there are many other avenues that can be explored – happy hunting!
